Hi tech peeps ... Too often lately, when I've tried to view a video, it doesn't start when I click 'play' but instead the screen turns grey. I then get a panel stating there is a problem and that Windows has to close down. Then another Windows panel pops up saying a new tab has been opened so as to recover the page. But then all that is repeated again and finally I get a page which states: "We were unable to return you to Flirt 4 Free. Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website. It appears that the website continues to have a problem."

It's true that this doesn't happen every single time I visit F4F and watch a vid, but it has often occurred within the last few weeks. Since I don't have this same situation with any other websites I visit, where you can watch free vids (like XTube and all the rest) I assume my computer isn't at fault.

Does anyone else have the same problem? I'd rather not switch to Firefox as I tried that once but much prefer IE. If anyone can say why this is only happening on F4F, and whether it can soon be fixed, I'd be grateful!

You might try setting flirt to run in compatability mode. Purg is prob the best to run through how to do this.

I have had this problem on an off. I know this isn't much help but I keep trying until it stops happening and it usuaully does. If it reaches the point where it give me the option to go back to the site then I do and it returns to where it left.

I just assumed its because I'm running IE 9 Beta with the Flash 10.2 beta but I guess not.

geoff28 have you had a look in the systems event logs when it crashes what the error it states is or if there is an error dump (error report file) can you paste it here too please may help track down why you are having this error.

Things you can also try.

1- Disable hardware acceleration in Flash player ( right click the chat and click settings and this will take you to the flash player settings in the display area try un-ticking "Enable hardware acceleration" or if no tick is there put one in and restart the browser and see if it helps.)

2- Also try updating your video card drivers to the latest version many video cards now require a driver update to use flash's new hardware acceleration feature correctly or it may cause browsers to become unstable when flash content is played.

Also don't install the new beta 10.2 beta it's still not stable enough for everyday use and the non-tech savvy will only find it adds other headaches. It's really just there for the flash developers and people that are tech savvy enough to deal with it's bugs.

Regarding Compatibility View I would read this.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956197

Also to update Compatibility View all you need to do is go to Windows Update and install the latest updates, one of them maybe an update for Compatibility View.

Thanks Nabil .. As to your last suggestion, I've checked and my Windows updates are being done automatically. It looks like there are daily checks, with the compatability update being successfully installed last month.

Curiously, in the last few days, I've not had the problem again. It seemed to be spasmodic anyway. Either it's cleared up on its own somehow, or there's just been a lull in the fault happening. I'll report back later if it occurs again!

uh oh .. Same thing has happened again today .. I tried to play a 'free' VIP VOD but the buffering wheel in the middle of the vid pic just froze in its spinning, the whole screen turned grey, and an IE panel came up and said it had a problem. The screen just stuck there in its grey mode, so I had to re-start the computer to unfreeze it

I also tried clicking the compatability icon at the top, above the address bar, but that didn't seem to help either. But F4F is literally the only site where I have this problem. I can watch recorded vids and streaming vids elsewhere with no trouble at all. Now I see other threads here from guys having exactly the same kind of VOD problems, so clearly it's a site problem and little to do with computer settings. Time to get the F4F whizz kids sorting it all out!

Similar happened to me with one particular Daily VOD today. Using Firefox the video began "Buffering" and failing to load within seconds the message "Adobe Flash Player Plugin failed etc"
appeared. Tried the same video in IE8 and it failed to start and it froze my system.

The one I played first yesterday (10 Jan) was Cory Redd from 3 January (6:48) and that's when the screen went grey and froze etc., so after I'd restarted my pc I didn't bother again. I've just tried that same VOD again now and it plays fine. Which is why I said at the outset that sometimes the VODs here work OK but the next time they all go haywire. I'll try a few more at random over the next day or so and will make a note of the successes and failures. Then I'll let you know the results!

Incidentally, sometimes the page shuts down here with the words "Windows has discovered a problem and needs to close" but then page pops back up again as having been "Recovered" under a new "Tab" ... all very strange!

I'd suggest changing to a decent web browser like Chrome or Firefox, anything but Internet Explorer - it's awful.

If IE is so "awful" why does it work perfectly on other sites I visit which also have vids and streaming? It's only this one that's giving problems, as you'll see from other posters comments here. Anyway, I tried Firefox and didn't like it, and neither do lots of others, as I discovered when googling the topic!

A quick PS: I just played a few random "Daily VODs" from both 4 & 5 January today and they all worked just fine .. and in IE too! .. So like I said at the outset, it's a spasmodic thing. Some days it's fine and others it's not. Whatever the reasons, I guess we'll have to leave it at that!

Not everything Microsoft produces is a succes. Vista was a complete failure even.
European regulations forced Microsoft to give up the monopoly position for the IE browser for their operating systems and since then Firefox has grown rapidly here, because it's faster and it causes less system crashes.
Because of these better qualities Firefox has passed IE and occupies 55% of the european market now.
I can understand why this website advices this faster and more stable browser for their demanding applications.

I'm a web developer. Getting things to work with IE can be an absolute pain in comparison to the other browsers. IE is slow and unsafe. Chrome is fast and safer (although it can be a bit of a memory hog). The vast numbers of old versions of IE out there hold back the evolution of the web, although that's not a fault of IE more the lazy people who won't upgrade (or can't upgrade).

Anyone know if uprgrading to IE9 would help? I was thinking about doing that.

I'm using IE9 Beta but there are still problems. I would suggest you avoid it until its the final version at least. Otherwise its just another wildcard in the mix.

I've still been having VOD playback problems here, with the screen going grey, closing down, tabs being recovered, and so on, but I wonder if having several players in the system might be a cause. To be specific, I recently installed a VLC Player to see some vids on another site where this player was recommended, but it just played havoc ... Previously downloaded vids in my system, which had played just fine in Windows Media Player or Quicktime or RealPlayer, stopped working altogether. Instead, I kept getting messages about missing codecs or file extensions etc.

So I uninstalled the VLC Player and for the most part things were back to normal, apart from the recurring F4F VOD problems I originally talked about here. I'd already installed a DivX Player a while back, so as an experiment I uninstalled that too yesterday and now the F4F VODs are playing just fine .. no freezing, no tab recoveries, and so on.

It may be just a coincidence and maybe tomorrow the F4F VODs won't work again. Still, perhaps the computer experts here can comment as to whether too many players in the system can conflict with each other. Different sites recommend different players for their vids, and DivX was a useful player for lots of things. But is it likely to have been the cause of the trouble I had here? Any thoughts? :)
